Trip 1: Magaliesberg / Waterberg / Sun City 13-26 February 2014

I have decided upon a two-week trip to the Magaliesberg and Waterberg areas as these offer great golf courses at affordable prices. Most people travel to the Cape and I feel that its time to get out and play some golf in the bushveld. This trip is available from 12 February to 26 February 2012.

13 February arrive in Johannesburg Airport where I will collect you. We depart directly from the airport to our house in Pecanwood Golf Estate.  The afternoon will be spent getting you settled in and we will do a drive around the course so that you can get to see what’s on offer.

14 February we play a round at Pecanwood in the morning. The afternoon is yours to take it easy at the poolside or health spa on the course. Perhaps book a massage or try out the gym? You could also just lie at the pool at our house.

15 February we need to get up bright and early and depart for Sun City to play the Gary Player Country Club. This is one of the countries best golf course and has often been voted as the number one course in South Africa.  Each year the course hosts the Nedbank Challenge a tournament where the 12 best in the world are invited to play for a prize fund of 2 Million US dollars.

Sun City offers an amazing array of things to do so we can spend the afternoon enjoying what it has to offer.

Depart for Pecanwood and a Braai (barbecue) in true South African style awaits us.

16 February we drive to the Pilansberg Nature Reserve. We will spend around 2.5 hours driving around the reserve before we drive to play at the Lost City Golf Course in the afternoon. This course is also located in the Sun City complex and is one of the most stunning settings you will get to see in the world. A sundowner on the terrace after our round is highly recommended and essential if time allows it.

17 February we have a break from golf and spend the morning taking it easy. If you so wish you are of course more than welcome to go and make use of the splendid practice facilities in Pecanwood. In the afternoon we will take a drive out to the Cradle of Mankind which I am certain all will find very interesting. If you so wish play 9 holes in the late afternoon back at Pecanwood.

18 February please pack some extra clothes as we head off to play Elements Golf Course and will overnight in the area.  This is a very stunning course cut out of the savannah and very challenging.

19 February we will play Legend Golf and Safari course. This golf course has each of the 18 holes designed by a different golf legend from Gary Player to Ernie Els. And for those of us that want to try out something different why not play the extreme 19th hole. A par 3 of 400 metres played from a mountain top 400m high and accessed by helicopter. To the best of my knowledge only 3 players have ever made par here among them Padraig Harrington.

20 February we have another day off and will visit the Roof Top Market where you will be able to buy African curios and mementos. We will also go to Sandton City which is the new Johannesburg. Once again if time allows why not play 9 when we get back or go out and practice.

21 February we will try to get you a round on the most private and exclusive golf course in Johannesburg if not in South Africa. Blair Atholl Estate is built on the land belonging to Gary Player and is a must play course. There are many holes that have been designed based upon existing holes around the world including the par 3 in Amen Corner in Augusta National. When you stand on tee box 3 you feel very much as if you are about to play hole 12 in Augusta as the green and surrounds have been designed exactly as per this hole. A truly memorable experience on a truly magnificent golf course that I have had the privilege to play on. If we are unable to get onto this course we will play Roodepoort Country Club instead which is a beautiful course designed by Gary Player.

22 February we will play a round on Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate which is a new golf estate designed by Jack Nicklaus. We will have a midday tee time so this allows us to have a lie in. The course is new and all of the grasses for fairways and greens have been imported and set up to tour standards.

23 February we play Royal Johannesburg which hosts the annual Joburg Open. This is a stunning layout and a test for golfers of all levels. This will be a midday tee off again so no need to get up to early.

24 February we take the day off and simply drive up to Sun City to enjoy the day there.

25 February we play our home course again and have an afternoon braai.

26 February we leave for the Rhino and Lion Park to spend a few hours there on our way back to the airport for your flight back to Europe.

So long your Udo.

Hi Geoffrey

Since I do not have any experience with trips to South Africa I cannot really comment on the price. What is being offered looks great and as a native South African you will be the best tour guide one can have.

Since I cannot leave the office in February (years end in accounting) I do wish you a great trip and many participants. I wish I could come with you buddy.

Cheers
Mario

Hi Mario

Thanks for your feedback.

I am planning to grow this out and offer trips in October/November and the from January through to end April so that I may meet the needs of more people.

Hope you were well looked after in getting a new set for your daughter?

Cool itenary, but i think the trip back from Legends to Sandton after a long day is a bit optimistic. Its about a 400km shlep. Try and get accomodation there its awsome. I recommend you drive up from Legends and stay there instead.

Yep, it will be a long trip and perhaps I have cocked up the itinerary on that day. The day trip to Sandton is supposed to be on a day when we are not playing! Will have to take a look at it. But that’s part of the fun I think. See you soon.
